Smalley Steel Ring Company was established in 1918 as a supplier of precision automotive piston rings. Today, Smalley Steel Ring Company is well known in the spiral retaining ring and spring business. Smalley is located in the Chicago Suburbs and has international distributors worldwide.
Smalley manufactures products for many different applications. Some industries that have advanced from Smalley products are Automotive, Aerospace, Medical, Military, Appliance and General Industrial Throughout the years Smalley has become established as the top manufacturer of spiral retaining rings and flat wire wave springs. Smalley has proved this by being a GM Supplier of the Year! Smalley is QS 9000 and ISO 9001 Certified. Many industries have benefited from Smalley products; for example, the automotive industry uses Crest-to-Crest springs to fit where even the smallest of coil springs can not. Our spiral retaining rings are used for clutches, transmissions and many other automotive components. Smalley products offer unique characteristics, which make them desirable in so many different applications.
Smalley starts with round wire, which is then crushed on all sides to produce flat wire. The flat wire is cold rolled on all surfaces to produce a material with a uniform microstructure and a smooth outer surface free of pits, scratches, cracks, seams and other physical discontinuities.

Smalley offers an exclusive manufacturing process called The Circular-Grain Process. This process is not a stamping, but rather a continuous coil that is made from edge-wound, pre-hardened, spring-tempered flat wire. The flat wire has a grain structure that is linear, providing exceptional strength and dimensional stability. Smalley's Circular-Grain Process offers unusual flexibility in production. There is no special tooling needed, even for prototype or custom configurations. While efficient in high speed, high volume production, Smalley is also equipped to handle smaller runs, prototypes or special design requirements.
Spiral retaining rings have No Ears To Interfere[TM]. Spiral rings are interchangeable with standard snap ring grooves. There is no special tooling required for removal; carbon and stainless steel are available off the shelf. Stock sizes range from 114' to 16" and specials can be produced from 9/32" to 84". Flat wire wave springs can fit in tight radial and axial spaces. Stock sizes ran from 3/8" to 16", in carbon and stainless steel. Specials are available from 9/32" to 84".
