Stull puts the lid on microwave uses: new closures open doors for microwavable steel cans and many other new applications
Stull Technologies has come to the forefront of packaging news yet again with its line of microwave oven-safe Micro-Loc closures.
Known for creating some of the most innovative and widely used closure designs for food and household items, Stull recently rolled out a new generation of lids for microwavable containers. Stull first introduced a similar microwavable lid technology last year when they developed the Double-Lock Top for Campbell's line of microwavable soups. Standard friction-fit closures have the problem of popping off or disengaging during microwave heating. Campbell worked with Stull for a more efficient and superior functioning lid. Despite the challenges of creating a new closure system for a product with established size and dimensions and already in distribution, Stull was successful in developing a system that was better and more reliable for both Campbell and the consumer.
Central to the Micro-Loc closure is a locking system that can be easily removed and replaced by the user, but stays securely on the container during heating. To meet this requirement, the MicroLoc system features three "locks" or tabs around the inside of the lid. Two of them are fixed in place, and the third "flex-lock" is released by disengaging a single tab for easy removal. When reapplied to the container, the lid snaps down, alerting the user that it is securely applied.
Micro-Loc also features a patented venting system that releases pressure from steam build-up during heating, enabling the closure to remain securely in place. The unique vents also prevent product overflow or loss, and allow for uniform heating.
Now Stull's groundbreaking closure system has gone beyond traditional microwavable packaging. It will be coupled with Ball Corp.'s Fusion-Tek microwavable steel can, released in late October at Pack Expo International. This is a significant match-up in the development of microwave products, and is sure to lead to a host of new applications of Stull's closure technology.
In addition to the original design for cans, Stull is introducing similar lids in multiple sizes for microwavable bowls for products like pastas, stews, chili and other foods, as well as a smaller design featuring a hinged sealing door which snaps in place over a single opening. One version of this product will have a drink hole for microwavable beverages, while the other will feature a pour spout, intended for heating and pouring products such as sauces and gravies.
Stull Technologies continues to demonstrate its creativity and innovation, working closely with customers to develop tailor-made products. Micro-Loc is just the latest example of a good idea fostered carefully from concept phase to mass production.
