AK Steel to restart Zanesville mill

Steel maker cites demand for electric sheet steels in restarting Ohio plant

AK Steel Holding Corp. said Thursday it plans to restart an idled mill at its Zanesville Works plant and recall 14 hourly employees.

The company cited strong demand for its electric sheet steels, which are used primarily in power transmission and distribution equipment.

Restart of the cold rolling mill will recall members of United Auto Workers Local 4104 who have been laid off since it was idled in June 2005. In April, the company restarted an annealing and pickling line that was also idled last year. Together the two facilities recall 50 hourly production and maintenance employees.
